Hi PTC Coordinators and PTC Board,
There have been concerns raised about the Board decision last week to move to Maidu next year and consolidate K-5 for a year or two, then move back to Excelsior. This would close Maidu at that point. There will be Eureka Union School district representation at the PTC meeting next week, Sept. 23 11-1 at the Maidu stage to discuss the decision with parents. Please let concerned parents know about this opportunity.

The confusion is very understandable. The Board left off in May with the decision to go to Maidu, but intended to study the possibility of re-opening Excelsior after moving to Maidu for an unspecified amount of time. This study was undertaken, and the decision verified at the last Board meeting, to move to k-5 at Maidu for a year or two in order to give time for kindergarten buildings to be completed at Excelsior, then move the k-5 back to Excelsior. The rationale is location,(proximity to services at Johnson Ranch and future possible STAR operations, transportation centralization, campus structure, parking and street access) and likelihood of being able to successfully lease or sell the Maidu campus (near city facilities, near commercial development, etc.) The consolidation of the k-5 still has to occur at Maidu since there is not enough room at Excelsior right now to comfortably accommodate the numbers of k-5 children expected in the next
year or two.

If Excelsior was to be ready to re-open the next year or two, the Board had to make the decision now so that the bidding process could begin and so that clearances could be obtained by all the levels of state and local governing bodies involved.

While the decision was made at the Board meeting, there really hasn’t been any other additional public discussion, so there is a need to communicate. I was at the Board meeting, but there were not many other parents there to hear the discussion, so please remind parents about the PTC meeting.

Parents are welcome to call or e-mail to anyone on the PTC Board or to the district office with questions.
